Digital divide in schools?
Nyalunya Secondary School in January, joined the global community in celebrating the International Day of Education under the theme “Embracing AI in Education.” The event, held at the school grounds , brought together students, teachers, and education stakeholders to explore the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of learning. The annual observance, marked every January 24, emphasizes the transformative power of education in promoting peace, sustainable development, and opportunity. This year’s theme highlighted the growing impact of AI on education systems—and the need to integrate technology in a way that is inclusive, ethical, and centered on human values. At Nyalunya, the focus was on bridging the digital divide and empowering students with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a technology-driven world. The event featured interactive sessions led by an AI expert, who introduced both students and teachers to the basics of AI and its practical applications in education. Students received hands-on training in using AI-powered tools. “This initiative is about more than just introducing technology—it’s about making sure every student, regardless of background, can benefit from it,” said one of the trainers. “We want our learners to see AI not as a distant concept, but as something they can understand, use, and even build a future around.” The event specifically targeted four Form Four candidates, equipping them with foundational knowledge in AI, raising awareness about digital ethics, and encouraging them to consider careers in tech and innovation.Teachers also benefited from the training, learning how AI can enhance classroom delivery, track student performance, and support individualized learning. In addition to boosting digital literacy, the event emphasized responsible and ethical AI use—highlighting concerns such as data privacy, fairness, and human agency. The school plans to continue integrating digital tools into its learning environment and hopes to attract further support to reduce digital inequality. As one student remarked, “Today opened my eyes to how technology can help me not only in school but in life. I’m now thinking of pursuing a career in AI. With such initiatives, Nyalunya Secondary is setting an example for how schools can embrace innovation while keeping education accessible and grounded in human values.
